TREE SURGERY PLANNING

Tree work brief builder

Describe the result you want and the site constraints, leaving the appropriate tree-work method to an arborist.

No name, address or contact details needed. Entries are processed in your browser without sending an enquiry. Copy or download your result to keep it; this website does not save your tool entries.

Choose the closest description. Your result will be questions to discuss, rather than a diagnosis or specification.

Other things to mention (optional)
Read all the planning prompts

More light or clearance

  • Describe what needs clearance and why, without choosing a pruning percentage.
  • Identify nearby buildings, paths and neighbouring land from ground level.
  • Ask the arborist what options preserve a suitable tree structure and what permissions need checking.

A tree’s condition or future

  • Describe the visible change or concern and when it was noticed.
  • Keep any previous survey or maintenance record available.
  • Ask what inspection or written assessment is needed before deciding on work.

Removing a tree

  • Explain the reason for considering removal and any alternatives already discussed.
  • Ask how ownership, tree protection and relevant wildlife constraints will be checked.
  • Discuss access, waste, the stump and making good as separate parts of the scope.

A remaining stump

  • Describe the intended future use of the area.
  • Note access width and known nearby structures or services without digging.
  • Ask how depth, arisings and reinstatement will be agreed for that specific site.

Hedge cutting or reduction

  • Describe the length and desired outcome without climbing to measure height.
  • Mention boundary ownership, neighbouring access and any nesting concerns.
  • Ask which method, timing and waste arrangements suit the hedge and its setting.

Assumptions and limits

This is not a tree-risk assessment or a pruning prescription. Keep away from unstable branches and do not climb, cut or dig to supply information. Use direct emergency reporting where there is immediate danger.

Use Colchester City Council’s tree-protection information to check known TPO and conservation-area constraints before agreeing tree work. The tool does not determine protection status or grant consent.
